Use the right comparison image

A hand swatch can show texture and application density, but a lip image also includes the wearer’s own pigmentation and lighting. A thick swatch does not prove that a thin application will look equally opaque. Look for the amount applied and whether the image depicts one layer or several.

Try the directed application in your own routine

When the product directions permit layering, evaluate a normal first application before adding more. If the result is too subtle, another layer may change the appearance; if the formula becomes uncomfortable or uneven, more product may not solve the problem. Do not assume all finishes can be layered the same way. Someone who likes quick reapplication may prefer a forgiving sheer effect. Someone seeking a sharply defined statement color may prefer greater coverage. These are preference decisions, not safety or quality rankings. Compare ingredient and use information independently from the visual effect.

Before you decide

  • Record coverage separately from finish.
  • Do not equate a shade name across brands.
  • Follow the selected product’s layering directions.
