Ask how the counter handles testing
A clean-looking cap does not tell you how a tester was used previously. Ask staff what testing methods are available and whether you can inspect sealed ingredient information. If a hygienic test is not available, use product descriptions and the store’s purchase terms instead of taking an avoidable risk.
Separate a color check from a wear trial
A hand swatch can help compare hue and finish, while a personal lip application answers a different question. If you cannot test a formula appropriately at the counter, do not treat the hand result as a complete comfort or long-wear test.
Keep your own products personal
Do not share applicators or use a friend’s lipstick directly. Keep caps and tools clean. If you have a reaction to a product, stop using it and preserve its identifying details for the manufacturer or your healthcare professional. We do not recommend a universal at-home sanitation procedure that makes shared products safe.
Before you decide
- Ask staff about testing hygiene.
- Use a new applicator for each application.
- Treat a swatch as limited color information.
